Spring Cleaning Tips

If you live in the northern United States, you’re probably anticipating that first harbinger of Spring, the robin. But with that sign comes responsibility. As a home owner, it’s time to get your house ready for the coming months. Here are a few things you need to do to get your house in order:

INSIDE THE HOUSE

For you to do:

  • Change the batteries in your smoke carbon monoxide detectors
  • Check your fire extinguisher for pressure
  • Change or clean your furnace filter
  • Drain your water heater
  • Check all drains in the house for clogs
  • Turn your mattresses
  • Open windows for ventilation
  • Wash windows inside and out
  • Clean scuff marks off walls and doors
  • Deep clean every room, a room at a time  
    • Dust and clean baseboards
    • Wash soil from walls and doors
    • Dust ceiling fans
    • Dust door moldings
    • Dust top of tall furniture
    • Remove all items from cabinets and shelves to dust
    • Wash vases, dust figurines, etc.
    •  Wash crystal and china
    • Vacuum heating vents
    • Launder draperies or bring them in for cleaning
    • Wash windows and sills
    • Wash/reseal/wax floors Clean artificial plants (a hairdryer can help)
    • Clean appliances inside and out (do NOT use sharp objects)
  • Vacuum refrigerator and freezer coils
  • Wash dryer’s lint screen/vacuum vents
  • Clean carpets from winter soil
  • Replace heavier bedding with lighter blankets
  • Launder winter linens
  • Clean and waterproof leather boots and shoes
  • Sort through medicine cabinet for expired medications
  • Sort through product manuals and discard manuals for products you no longer own
  • Sort through coupons and discard expired ones

For you to set-up:

  • Make appointment for furnace/Air conditioning check
  • Make appointment for restarting your sprinkler system
  • Make appointment for pool cleaning

OUTSIDE THE HOUSE

  • Clean gutters from winter debris
  • Check roof for damage
  • Power clean garage floor/deck/patio
  • Reseal deck/secure loose nails or warped boards
  • Clean up branches and leaves from gardens and yard
  • Bring in Lawn mower for servicing
  • Inspect bicycles and other sporting equipment for damage
  • Replace burnt out light bulbs Wash cars, clean out and vacuum interiors
